Don’t charge them to their max capacity
Pushing the battery to its maximum capacity is i.e. full charging is also one of the prominent causes behind them becoming dead only after few years of usage.
The more time a vehicle spends or near full charge, the worst it is for the car battery. It doesn’t mean you just cant charge fully. Do the maximum charge only when you need to use it immediately. You can also take help of a timer or if you don’t have timer installed on your car battery then you can do an overnight standard charging and then charge the last 10-20% in the morning before driving.
Maximum capacity charging is the most dreadful thing that happens to lithium batteries. Daily charging it to 100% can be stressful to the battery so it is ok to charge them even up to 80%. Lithium ion batteries can do well even in 30%-90% of charging.
Don’t let the battery sit at max state for more than 8 hours. It also leaves some space to store energy from regenerative braking so it is also advantage of not fully charging the battery.
Avoid deep discharging
Even if you can’t fully charge the EV it doesn’t mean that you should practice deep discharging. For maximum battery life , the 100% state of discharge should be avoided.
Even batteries are charged at least 40% before shipment or when being stored. Completely discharged batteries can leave it useless in less time span.
Deep discharge is just like driving on near to empty fuel tank which can lead to excessive damage and premature wear of certain crucial auto parts. The same wear and tear thing happens with electric vehicle as battery comes under a lot of stress.
So, what is the low state of charge? You should not let your EV battery’s charge pass 30% limit or below.
Temperature extremes can adversely impact driving range. There are standard three temperature ranges as: 75°F, 20°F and 95°F. A standard lithium ion battery comes with the range of temperature between 20°F-85°F.
Extreme temperature can not only impact electric car battery performance but overall car’s performance too. Battery degradation can be fuelled up in hotter areas. Several auto giants like Nissan has introduced special climate battery for example hot climate battery for certain hot regions. So, consider what kind of temperature you live in before buying an EV and if the EV makers offer special climate battery with good public review, then go for it!
How to tackle a moderate cold or hot climate? On a hot day, try to park in shade because you would not want the thermal management system to run continuously because it will drain away the battery charge by the time you come back.
During the winters, try parking in the garage rather street to avoid discharging.
Consider mountain modes
By engaging mountain mode of your EV for example Chevrolet Volt’s, you can save the 10 miles that have been cut off before you switch to the gas mode. When you want to go back in the electric mode, you can just select normal and then the engine switches off thus providing you 10 miles of fuel free driving.
Plan ahead for extended storage
Going on a trip? Set the charge level to 50% and leave it plugged in. Charge to a level. If you are using airport’s charging point then be careful.
Charge to a level where you can get to the airport, let it sit for the trip and then still have enough charge with buffer to get back home.
Use DC quick charge
Fast charging comes with a heavy price i.e. slaying battery’s longevity. You can use DC chargers as a quick solution like when you need to get to workplace within 1 hour then 30 minutes of DC charging is enough for at least 80 miles distance.
But avoid fast charging. It slowly takes the charging capabilities of the car battery and of course affects its lifespan. As an urgent solution it is ok but not every day.
Replacing worn car battery
Electric car batteries can last long like for maximum 8 years but it all depends upon driving conditions and usage. So proper maintenance and regular check up is very important.
If used in worst condition then you might not only have to replace car battery but also will have to pay for the replacement of car parts that have been damaged along with the battery.
